Non-performing loans are increasing in the banking sector, industries and businesses have slowed down, young people are leaving the country for opportunities abroad, investor confidence appears weak, and overall economic activity in the market has declined. Despite these difficulties, Nepal still possesses strong foundations for growth, including abundant water resources, tourism potential, agriculture, a young workforce, and a strategically important geographic location. With the right policies, stable leadership, and effective implementation, Nepal can begin a new phase of economic recovery and development.

Improving Nepal’s economy requires more than simply introducing a budget or lowering interest rates. Long-term vision, production-oriented policies, financial discipline, an investment-friendly environment, and rebuilding public confidence are all essential for sustainable economic progress.

1. Political Stability and Policy Clarity

One of the biggest challenges to Nepal’s economic development has been political instability. The frequent change of governments has often led to changes in policies, creating uncertainty among investors. Before making long-term investments, both domestic entrepreneurs and foreign investors seek stable policies and a reliable business environment. In Nepal, many projects have been delayed or halted due to political interference, policy inconsistency, and administrative inefficiency. Therefore, political stability and a long-term economic vision must become the foundation of economic reform. The government should establish economic policies that remain consistent for at least 10 to 15 years. Clear strategies are especially needed in key sectors such as energy, tourism, agriculture, industry, and the digital economy.

2. Building a Production-Oriented Economy

Nepal’s economy remains heavily dependent on imports. Most consumer goods are brought in from foreign countries, while exports remain weak. As a result, the country is facing a growing problem of foreign currency outflow with limited income generation. To address this imbalance, Nepal must focus on developing a production-oriented economy by strengthening sectors such as agriculture, herbal products, hydropower, tourism, information technology, and small-scale industries.

At present, many young people are leaving Nepal for employment opportunities abroad. If these youths can be encouraged to engage in agriculture, industries, and entrepreneurship within the country, domestic production can significantly increase. The agricultural sector, in particular, needs modernization through advanced technology, better irrigation systems, storage facilities, and improved market management. Although farmers produce goods, many are unable to receive fair prices, which has weakened the sector. Agriculture and industries should also be better connected with the banking system so that affordable loans and technical support can be provided to entrepreneurs and farmers.

3. Strengthening Trust in the Banking Sector

Nepal’s banking sector is currently under significant pressure. Rising non-performing loans, businesses being blacklisted, difficulties in loan recovery, and slow investment expansion have become major concerns. Banks need to reduce their heavy dependence on real estate and commercial lending and instead increase investment in productive sectors such as agriculture, energy, tourism, manufacturing, and small enterprises. The Nepal Rastra Bank should maintain financial stability while encouraging banks to invest in productive industries. Interest rates should remain stable and practical. Excessively high interest rates weaken industries and businesses, while extremely low rates can harm financial discipline. In addition, transparency, good governance, and accountability within the banking sector must be strengthened. Banks should focus on protecting public savings and rebuilding trust among people and investors.

4. Encouraging the Private Sector

The economy of any country becomes dynamic through the active participation of the private sector. In Nepal, however, many entrepreneurs and business owners appear discouraged. High tax pressure, administrative complications, policy uncertainty, and a shrinking market have weakened private sector confidence. The government should treat the private sector as a development partner rather than merely a source of revenue. A business-friendly environment, tax reforms, expansion of digital services, and an efficient one-window system are necessary to support industries and businesses. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) require special protection and support, as they have the potential to create large numbers of jobs. Young people should also be provided with entrepreneurship training, concessional loans, and better access to markets so they can build successful businesses within the country.

5. Employment and Skill Development

One of Nepal’s biggest challenges is unemployment and the shortage of skilled human resources. Millions of young people are leaving the country in search of opportunities abroad. Although remittances continue to support the economy, they are not a sufficient long-term solution. Sustainable employment opportunities must be created within Nepal through investment in industries, tourism, agriculture, and technology sectors. At the same time, the country needs to implement a skill-based education system. The current education system remains largely theoretical, with limited practical and vocational training. Technical and vocational education should be expanded from the school and college levels onward. Nepal also needs policies that encourage young people not only to seek jobs, but also to become job creators through innovation, entrepreneurship, and business development.

6. Focusing Investment on Tourism and Hydropower

Tourism is one of the most important sectors for improving Nepal’s economy. With its majestic mountains, rich culture, religious heritage, and natural beauty, Nepal holds a unique position in the world. However, due to inadequate infrastructure, limited international promotion, and insufficient quality services, the country has not been able to fully benefit from its tourism potential. Nepal needs to improve international-standard infrastructure, including roads, airports, and hotel management systems. Greater priority can also be given to religious tourism, adventure tourism, and rural tourism.

Similarly, hydropower can become a long-term foundation for Nepal’s economic growth. By increasing electricity production, Nepal has the potential to export energy to neighboring countries such as India and Bangladesh. This would significantly increase foreign currency earnings and strengthen the national economy.

7. Good Governance and Corruption Control

Corruption remains one of the biggest obstacles to economic development in Nepal. Policy-level corruption, commission-based practices, and administrative delays have negatively affected development projects and economic progress. Investors are often reluctant to invest when they do not receive a fair and transparent environment. Therefore, good governance, transparency, and the rule of law are essential for sustainable economic reform. Government spending should be transparent, development budgets should be utilized on time, and unnecessary political interference in administrative processes must be reduced.

8. Digital Economy and Innovation

The world is rapidly moving toward a digital economy, and Nepal also has significant potential in information technology, digital banking, fintech, and online services. If opportunities can be created for young people in the IT sector, Nepal could earn substantial income through the export of digital services. Expanding digital transactions can also improve transparency and efficiency in the economy. The government should therefore focus on strengthening digital infrastructure, improving cybersecurity, and developing supportive startup policies to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship.

In conclusion, improving Nepal’s economy is not impossible, but it requires practical planning, strong political commitment, and public confidence. The country must move forward by increasing domestic production, encouraging the private sector, strengthening trust in the banking system, creating employment opportunities, and ensuring good governance. Nepal possesses both valuable resources and immense potential. What is needed now is effective leadership, clear policies, and strong implementation. If the government, private sector, banking industry, and civil society work together with a shared vision and commitment, Nepal can become an economically self-reliant and prosperous nation.

Banking Khabar / Nepal’s economy is currently going through a challenging period.
