No New Notes This Dashain

Banking Khabar/ There will be no issuance of new banknotes for this year’s Dashain festival. Unlike previous years, the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has decided to circulate only clean, previously issued notes instead of printing and distributing new ones.

In past years, the central bank would print and store new banknotes three to four months ahead of the Dashain festival, targeting their distribution during the festive season. However, this year, the NRB has decided not to distribute newly printed notes for Dashain.

For those who require small and large denominations during Dashain, the central bank will facilitate the exchange of clean notes that were circulated in the market last year and returned to the banks. The NRB has also indicated that this discontinuation of new note exchange during Dashain could continue in the coming years.

In the past, the NRB provided an exchange facility of up to NPR 18,500 per person and NPR 61 million per bank for notes of NPR 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 denominations. Along with new notes, the NRB also offered the exchange of clean notes. The central bank has stated that this year, the exchange of clean notes will be available within specified limits for both small and large denominations.
