Commercial Banks Invest Nearly 400 Billion In Energy

Banking Khabar/ Nepal’s banks and financial institutions have provided loans worth 376 billion 15.3 million in the energy sector. The data obtained from Nepal Rastra Bank for the last financial year 2080-81 shows this.

Currently, banks have to invest 10 percent of the total loan amount in the energy sector. Moreover, this has a deadline of Ashadh 2084. Before that, there is a provision of the National Bank to raise the interest rate to 7 percent by the end of Ashadh 2082, 8 percent by the end of Ashadh 2083 and 10 percent by the end of Ashadh 2084.

By the end of Ashadh 2081, the ratio (share) of loans provided by banks to the energy sector was 7.27 percent. Until the end of last Ashadh, banks had provided loans of 5.1 trillion 67 billion 173 million rupees. In that, 376 billion 15.3million rupees of loans have been disbursed in the energy sector.

Commercial banks alone have invested 365 billion 247.9 million rupees in loans. Similarly, development banks have invested 9 billion 834.8 million rupees and finance companies have invested 932.5 million rupees.

Kumari Bank is seen to be at the forefront in terms of investing in the energy sector. The said bank has invested 35 billion 756 million rupees in the energy sector. Nabil Bank is in second place with 31 billion 11.3 million 68 thousand rupees in the energy sector. Nepal Investment Mega Bank, which is in the third place, has invested 30 billion 577.2 million rupees in the energy sector.

Similarly, Global IME- 25 billion 560 million, NMB-25 billion 250 million, Lakshmi Sunrise-23 billion 260 million, Prime Commercial-21 billion 720 million, Rastriya Banijya Bank-20 billion 560 million, Prabhu-19 billion 660 million, Sanima-19 billion 620 million and Citizens-16 billion 290 million rupees have been invested in the energy sector.

Similarly, Siddhartha-16 billion 170 million, Himalayan-15 billion 690 million, Everest 14 billion 640 million, Nepal Bank-12 billion 840 million, Machhapuchhre 12 billion 39.1 million, Nepal SBI-10 billion 360 million, Agricultural Development 7 billion 19.1 million, NIC Asia-3 billion 823.3 million,  and Standard Chartered Bank- 3 billion 338.9 million rupees is disbursed in loans to the energy sector.
