Banking Khabar / United States Grants Temporary Waiver on Russian Oil Sanctions Amid Rising Middle East Tensions
As tensions linked to Iran continue to escalate in the Middle East, concerns over global oil supply disruptions have intensified. In response, the United States Department of the Treasury has announced a 30-day temporary waiver on sanctions affecting Russian oil cargoes currently at sea.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent shared the announcement on social media platform X, stating that the temporary license was introduced to support vulnerable and energy-deficient nations facing fuel supply challenges. According to him, the decision is aimed at stabilizing the global crude oil market and ensuring uninterrupted energy supplies to countries in need.
Meanwhile, India has made it clear that it will continue importing oil from Russia despite ongoing U.S. sanctions. Speaking at a press conference, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary at India’s Petroleum Ministry, said India’s policy on Russian oil imports has remained consistent from the beginning.
She emphasized that India had been purchasing Russian oil before the U.S. waiver, during the waiver period, and would continue doing so in the future. Sharma also clarified that the American sanctions have not affected India’s import strategy in any way.
Experts believe the growing instability in the Middle East could trigger further volatility in global crude oil prices. Many analysts view Washington’s latest move as an attempt to prevent major disruptions and maintain stability in the international energy market.
