Nepal Rastra Bank has introduced a new Rs 500 note into circulation from today.

Banking Khabar / Nepal Rastra Bank has introduced a new Rs 500 denomination banknote into circulation. According to a notice issued by the Currency Management Department, the new note, which retains the same size and color as the previous version but includes enhanced features, has come into circulation from Ashadh 3, 2083 (June 17, 2026).

According to Nepal Rastra Bank, the new banknote features a statement confirming the guarantee of the Government of Nepal, along with the image of the Himalayas, a rhododendron watermark, a tactile mark for visually impaired people, and various other security features.

The front side of the note includes an image of the Himalayas along with the inscription “B.S. 2082” and bears the signature of Governor Prof. Dr. Bishwanath Paudel. The note also contains a 3.5 mm wide security thread, which appears red when viewed directly and green when tilted, according to the central bank.

The reverse side of the note features the image of a one-horned rhinoceros. It includes the text “NEPAL RASTRA BANK” above the image, while the lower section mentions “RUPEES FIVE HUNDRED” and “2025 A.D.”

Nepal Rastra Bank has stated that previously issued Rs 500 denomination banknotes will continue to remain legally valid and in circulation.

The new note is expected to strengthen security features and help control the circulation of counterfeit currency. The Currency Management Department has stated that the new banknotes will be gradually distributed to the public through banks and financial institutions.
