FOREIGN CURRENCY UP TO USD 5,000 ALLOWED WITHOUT DECLARATION.

Banking Khabar / Foreign nationals will be allowed to bring up to 5,000 US dollars. According to a new circular issued by Nepal Rastra Bank, a foreign individual can bring up to 5,000 US dollars at a time, and if they bring more than that, they must make a self-declaration at customs.

By issuing a circular to the Foreign Exchange Management Department, Rastra Bank has stated that foreign nationals can bring foreign currency in cash up to 5,000 US dollars (in the case of Indian Rupees, equivalent to 5,000 US dollars, and in the case of other foreign currencies for which exchange rates are not published by banks, also equivalent to 5,000 US dollars) into Nepal without customs declaration.

In the case of amounts exceeding this limit, however, a customs declaration must be made and certified, as arranged by Rastra Bank. Nepal Rastra Bank has mentioned that this notice has been republished in accordance with the powers granted by Section 12 of the Foreign Exchange (Regulation) Act, 2019, as per the notices published on 2075 Ashad 32 and 2075 Chaitra 26.

Similarly, it has been stated that trading in Indian currency notes of denominations 500 and 1,000, as well as carrying, transporting, and trading in Indian currency notes of denominations 200, 500, and 2,000, is prohibited.

It has been mentioned that Nepali citizens are not allowed to take Indian Rupees to countries other than India or to bring Indian Rupees into Nepal from other countries.
