Banking Khabar/ The Genji protests on Bhadra 23 and 24 have triggered one of the biggest security crises in Nepal, with thousands of prisoners and detainees escaping from prisons and police custody across the country.
According to Nepal Police spokesperson DIG Binod Ghimire, 3,723 escapees have been recaptured and returned to jail, but 10,320 prisoners are still absconding. The police say the nationwide manhunt is ongoing, and the public has been urged to immediately inform nearby police offices if they have any information.
Some escapees trying to flee into India were caught by Indian police and sent back, while others have been rearrested by Nepal’s security forces. A few even returned to prisons voluntarily.
The situation has also affected police custody centers. Out of those who escaped, 139 detainees have been rearrested, but around 2,100 remain missing. Authorities warn that such a large-scale prison break, just days before the Dashain festival, poses a serious security challenge.
Banks and Public Safety at Risk
The mass prison escape has raised concerns for the banking and financial sector as well. Banks and financial institutions have stepped up their security measures, fearing potential incidents of vandalism, looting, or arson.
Security forces have been directed to remain alert in banks, government offices, marketplaces, and crowded areas, especially during the festival season when public movement increases sharply.
