Nepal’s Insurance Sector Faces Rs 207 Billion Claims After Gen Z Protests

Banking Khabar/ Private businesses hit by vandalism and arson during the Gen Z protests of September 8–9 have begun filing massive insurance claims. According to the Nepal Insurance Authority, by September 16, 18 non-life insurers had received 1,984 claims worth Rs 207 billion.

The highest claims were lodged at Oriental Insurance, mainly due to heavy damages at Bhatbhateni Supermarket, totaling Rs 54.1 billion across 40 claims. Siddhartha Premier followed with Rs 49.3 billion from 258 claims, while Shikhar Insurance received Rs 23.9 billion from 366 claims.

Other major insurers, including IGI Prudential, Sagarmatha Lumbini, Himalayan Everest, and Neco, each recorded claims exceeding Rs 10 billion. The remaining 11 companies reported lower amounts.

Though government offices and structures also faced destruction, they had no insurance coverage, leaving claims solely from the private sector. Officials expect the total claim amount to rise as damage assessments continue.
